Antique Portuguese Needlepoint Rug
Size: 12'6" × 19'3"
Date: 1970s
Material: Wool on Cotton
Portugal has a long tradition of producing large-format needlepoint carpets, distinct from knotted pile rugs in both technique and aesthetic. Worked in wool on a canvas foundation, Portuguese needlepoints were made for grand European interiors and follow a decorative tradition rooted in 17th and 18th-century textile design.
This is a substantial carpet at nearly 12'6" × 19'3" — a size that anchors a formal dining room or large reception space with ease. The field is covered in an all-over lattice of interlocking oval medallions on a soft ivory ground, each medallion filled with symmetrical foliate devices and small floral motifs in dusty blue and burgundy. The lattice framework connecting the ovals is worked in slate blue, giving the overall field a cool, silvery tone that reads as calm and elegant rather than bold. Small amber and rust accents at the junction points add warmth without disrupting the palette.
The border carries a repeating scroll pattern in terracotta and blue on a darker ground, providing just enough contrast to frame the field cleanly.
The palette — ivory, slate blue, dusty rose, and warm amber — is understated and works exceptionally well in neutral or traditionally furnished interiors. A carpet of this size and character in good condition is a practical find for a large room.
