Antique French Flatweave Rug
Size: 6'6" × 6'6"
Date: Early 1800s
Material: Wool on Wool
France developed its own flatweave tradition distinct from the knotted pile carpets of the Savonnerie and Aubusson workshops — simpler in construction but no less refined in design intent. Round format carpets of this type were made for specific architectural settings, typically placed beneath a central table or under a chandelier, and the circular composition was designed to be read from all sides equally.
This piece is organized around a central floral rosette set within concentric rings — a sunflower-like bloom at the core, surrounded by a terracotta circle, then a ring of pink roses and teal scrollwork, then a large eight-pointed star whose triangular points radiate outward to the perimeter. Small circular floral medallions sit between the star points. The outer edge is framed by a continuous laurel wreath border in terracotta and camel, a motif firmly rooted in the neoclassical decorative vocabulary of early 19th-century France.
The palette has faded gracefully over two centuries — warm camel, dusty terracotta, faded rose, and soft teal — giving the piece a muted, antique quality that reads as thoroughly European rather than Eastern. The overall effect is more fresco than textile, which suits the age and origin perfectly.
A rare circular format piece with genuine provenance in the French decorative tradition.
