Antique Caucasian Rug
Size: 3'9" × 4'11"
Date: 1910s
Material: Wool on Wool
A small village rug from the southern Caucasus with a spare, graphic composition that gives it more presence than its modest size would suggest. The deep burgundy-brown field is framed by a dark navy stepped border within the field itself, creating an inner panel effect that focuses the eye toward the centre.
A single ivory-outlined diamond medallion sits at the centre, its interior filled with a bold Greek key meander in navy and red with a small star rosette at its heart. Above and below, a vertical axis extends to the top and bottom of the inner panel, terminating in angular tribal devices — stylized human or totem-like figures drawn with the flat, abstracted quality typical of late Caucasian village work. Pairs of bare tree forms flank the central axis on either side, adding to the spare, almost minimalist quality of the field layout.
The ivory outer border carries a continuous geometric vine and a secondary reciprocal meander guard border in red and navy. The palette — deep burgundy, dark navy, ivory, and coral red — is sombre and warm, and the overall effect is quiet and direct.
A characterful small piece with an unusual, open field composition.
